“When he came to stay with us (Malanga and Terry Ork) I was not at all aware of his drug taking. I knew nothing about that. To me his limbering up, warming up in the morning, seemed to be quite a natural situation. I guess he has to do that kind of thing to stay in shape as a professional performer. I was crashing on the couch one morning. My camera was on the ground by my side, and he was doing knee-bend exercises. I think he may even had a shirt on. Then he took his shirt off. I picked up the camera and I started photographing him. He was very much aware of this. I just kind of worked around him while he was moving around. Then I don’t know what happened or what possessed me. I think I said something to him like, ‘Oh, well, maybe you should take your trousers off.’ And he said, ‘Ok,’ he was quite willing. That was the first time I photographed anyone nude, except for myself in a mirror.”
